How Jess manages to feed a large family
Jess admits that it’s not always easy for family members to like different things, but having a list of fail-safe recipes up her sleeve is a huge help.
Jess says,It’s hard to cater to 7 different people’s tastes and needs on a budget, but these meals are always a hit with our family! My kids are between 18 months and 7 years old and we have mixed sensory issues for two kids as well.
My kids have definitely been through tough times and still eat foods they refuse, which is fine for me because there are foods I don’t like as an adult, but Healthy Mummy has helped me find ways to hide veggies in tasty meals as well as showcase a variety of foods that I wouldn’t otherwise have tried .
Jess’s top tips for feeding a big family
- Breaking up meals for picky people so they can choose to mix things up / dip in sauces / try together but also have the option of tasting everything separately
- Show but don’t force otherwise it becomes a power struggle here. I always make sure there’s at least one thing on everyone’s plate that I know loves, and that makes “new” foods a little less intimidating.
- Toggle passata in recipes Homemade pasta sauce Loaded with blended veggies! I cook a ton of this with zucchini, capsicum, garlic, onion, spinach, and tomato and freeze in portions. Then I can use it with meatballs, pizza sauce, pasta sauce bases, enchiladas, dipping sauce for meatballs/vegetable chops, etc.
- Get the children involved in meal planning. We look through healthy mummy app Together or they order their favorite healthy mummy meals, and if they don’t like dinner on Monday, they know their next favorite on Tuesday for example. We talk about each person having different preferences/favorites and take turns eating them.
- If we’re having a meal, I know it won’t go well with the kids (eg they all hate french fries but hubby and I love it), they are given a small bowl to try and pick out, and I serve it with a big green smoothie full of Healthy mummy juice for kids Mix, frozen banana, baby spinach, frozen zucchini, cocoa powder and drizzled with peanut butter. They think they get a great chocolate milkshake and I know they have something nutritious, win!
