Hi friends! How are you? I hope you have a wonderful morning! what will you do today? I’m hiking with a friend – The weather’s been great. Study for IHPand a podcast interview. I’d love to hear what’s going on!
In today’s post, I wanted to talk a little bit about castor oil packaging. I’ve been using it on and off for about 12 years now, and have recently brought it back into my routine on a more regular basis. I first tried it when I started working with Dr. Flynn on my hormones before we got pregnant with Liv. It was part of their detox protocol, and they’ve come such a long way since then! It’s even more convenient now that there are less messy options. I figured I’d share more about my experience if it’s something you’ve heard of or are considering adding to your routine.
How to use a castor oil pack (and why you might want to)
What is the packaging of castor oil?
This ancient healing remedy is one of The oldest and most famous traditionused in traditional chinese medicine, ayurveda, to modern natural medicine.
Castor oil packs have been used around the world for centuries, and users have reported benefits that include:
– Mental and physical health improvements
– Improve hormonal imbalances (PCOS, estrogen dominance, etc.)
Digestive problems including bloating, constipation, indigestion, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Insomnia and other sleep disorders
– Reducing stress, anxiety and depression
– Regulating the menstrual cycle, endometriosis, TTC, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, fibrocystic breasts
Cancer and tumors
Thyroid health
– Liver and gallbladder support
What you need for castor oil pack
A piece of fleece or flannel
castor oil (make sure it’s organic and comes in a dark glass bottle)
heating pad
You can also get a set of Queen of Thrones, which is what I use. I love this option because it’s less messy, and the pack uses your body heat so you don’t need to add a heating pad.
How to use castor oil pack
First, you will put 1-2 tablespoons of castor oil on a vanilla bean or castor oil packet. Gently fold it in half to distribute.
Next, you’ll place a castor oil packet around your liver, which is located below your right rib cage.
Make sure to wear an old t-shirt on top because castor oil is messy and can stain!
If you are using traditional flannel or fleece, you can lie down and cover with a low heating pad. For 30-60 minutes, you can relax, meditate, or watch a show.
If you are using a file Queen of Thrones PackI find it’s way less messy—it has just about everything but I still wear an old dark T-shirt just in case—and because it stays put, you’re free to move around and do whatever you want to do.
Castor oil benefits
Since I’ve had some gallbladder issues in the past, I’ve been doing things to support my liver. Our liver and gallbladder are BFFs, so if you have gallbladder issues, you may need liver support too.
When I use a castor oil pack, I get better, deeper sleep (And super lucid dreams!) and I notice improved digestion.
They can improve our levels of glutathione, which is a powerful antioxidant that gets rid of excess estrogen, toxins, and plastic by-products (such as BPA). They can regulate bowel movements and provide relief from constipation so that excess hormones can leave the body. They can also reduce cortisol by shifting the body into a resting and digesting state; I noticed that I feel calmer and more balanced after using it.
You can read some studies about the potential benefits of using a castor oil pack here:

It can be messy.
There is not a lot of evidence to support it, as it has not been studied extensively. The good news is that I didn’t experience any potentially harmful effects from using it topically (unless you’re pregnant or have any skin issues or contraindications. That’s why it’s important to talk to your doctor).
How often do you use a castor oil bottle?
It really depends on how you feel after using it. I’m all about using the stuff minimally as needed and still noticing positive results. There is a sweet spot, however, where too little or too frequent use diminishes the benefits. For me, I like to use it 1-2 times a week. On the website, they say you can sleep in it, but I don’t think it’s necessary, especially if you feel the difference without having to sleep with it on.
If you’re trying to conceive, it’s usually recommended to use a castor oil pack during the first half of your menstrual cycle, which precedes ovulation. (Of course, talk to your doctor or practitioner.) This is the method I used when I was trying to conceive. I would wear it at night until ovulation, then take a break until my next period.
Note: Castor oil packs and castor oil are not intended for use during pregnancy. It is sometimes used to induce labour Because it is a laxative and can cause uterine contractions – I’ve heard horror stories of women who took it to induce labor and ended up with horrific digestive issues, and headed out looking dehydrated and exhausted – so just a heads up.
Tell me your friends: Have you used a castor oil pack before? Do you think you will?
