For today’s post, I’m sharing an updated review of my beloved sauna blanket, and high dose. Every time I post about this magical wonder on Instagram stories, I’m flooded with questions. I did quite a bit of research before I finally decided to look it up, so I detail them all in this post.
I have used this beauty now for over a year and have so many great things to say about it. It has become one of the non-negotiables in my weekly health exercise and makes a huge difference to my skin and my mood.
What is a HigherDOSE sauna blanket and how does it work?
The HigherDOSE sauna blanket is the home and portable version of an infrared sauna. It uses infrared heat (which warms your body from the inside out, not the other way around), along with healing tourmaline crystals, clay, and charcoal (which all generate negative ions). It’s made of non-toxic materials and is extremely low in EMF, so it doesn’t emit radiation all over your body while you relax and sweat.
To set it up, simply open the blanket and hook it up! You can easily adjust the heat settings using the remote and I usually give it about 10 minutes or so to heat up.
Infrared sauna benefits:
Sauna means “bath house” in Finnish, and heat has been used as a therapy for thousands of years. Infrared technology was born in the late nineteenth century. Over time, saunas have been used for many things, including healing and disease prevention, preparation for burial, and childbirth. (It was great to read a little about History of saunas here!) included the circle of life and heat was believed to be a powerful and life-giving protective force.
Obviously, technology has changed a lot since then, but today many people still use saunas for their health and restorative benefits. You can find it in gyms, at the spa, and many people have one in their home. Saunas can help with aging, disease, detoxification, healthy skin, increase blood flow, reduce anxiety, muscle soreness, relax, and improve mood. Not everyone is involved in the detoxifying aspect (some say it’s a myth, but I’m a firm believer in the detoxifying power of good sweat) and I notice that it makes my skin glow, improves my mood, and feels so good. zen and relaxation when it’s a regular part of my routine.
(It’s all wrapped up and sweating like a happy chipotle burrito.)
Here are some pros and cons HigherDOSE option:
Positives:
– It’s small and portable!! I would like a full size infrared sauna in our house, but we don’t have a room here. It would be a strange thing that I would have to build in the closet. I also thought of the backyard option, but when you live in Arizona, the idea of a snake or scorpion making its way into the sauna is a very real fear. This gives you the same advantages as infrared but it is small and compact and you can easily move it around. I usually use it on the floor of my office or in the living room.
– It feels amazing. I’m addicted to how great it feels and can use it every single day. (I usually have time to do this 3-4 times a week, usually after I’ve put the crew to bed! I only listen to a podcast or show on my iPad.) I love the heavy sweat and it fills me with endorphins. My skin looks brighter after I use it, I slept as a kid, and I didn’t notice any muscle soreness even though I was pushing it with strength exercises.
Negatives:
– I’ve been back to this post three times and still can’t think of anything. I’ve been very happy with it and haven’t found any issues or pain points. The only downside for me was that the old version of the blanket had a Velco closure; It has been updated with a very easy to use zipper closure.
Tips for using the HigherDOSE sauna blanket:
When using the blanket, be sure to read the instruction manual and directions, but these are just some of my tips:
Plug it in and let it heat up for 10 minutes. Make sure it is on a flat, fire-resistant surface.
– Discover your favorite sauna clothes. They recommend full wear in a blanket with lightweight, breathable options. I wear lightweight cotton pants, a long-sleeved tank top over them, and full socks. I also put a small towel under my tailbone or my booty gets too hot from pressing the blanket on the tiles. They just added a sauna accessory that you can use instead too!
– Find something to entertain you during sauna time. It’s very hard to read a book because you don’t want to keep moving your arms to turn the page, but a TV show, movie, audiobook, or podcast all work just fine.
– Sweat it! You can play around with the heat and time settings to see what works best for you, and I recommend working your way up rather than starting in too hot or for too long. You will find that your heart rate will increase slightly and you will start to sweat. it’s a wonderful feeling. My sweet spot is 35 minutes at level 7. (I always set a timer on my phone so I don’t sleep!)
After I get out of the blanket, I open it to start drying, and hop in the shower. After taking a shower, the blanket had cooled down a bit so I could clean it well with one of these wipes. This is the same cleaning wipes I use the Peloton! I always unplug the power supply cord when I’m done using it.
– I let it dry completely before folding it and removing it under my bed for storage. (Make sure the wire is not coiled or bundled when storing it. Try to keep it slightly looped.)
For travel, they also have a handy travel bag! I bring it with me for all future road trips.
