Most women admit that they have not done any vigorous exercise in the past 12 months
A new study by Nuffield Health finds that nearly half of women have not done vigorous or strenuous exercise in the past 12 months.
8000 participants took part in the survey and the results were amazing. 38% of women said they had gotten out of the habit of exercising in the wake of the pandemic.
While 47% said they failed to do vigorous exercise, 67% admitted they lacked motivation and 55% said they lacked time, compared to 46% of men.
Only 12% of girls plan to participate in sports
We know from a lot of research that women tend to feel dissatisfied with their bodies, and this seems to filter down to the younger generation as well.
Other research found that only 12% of girls plan to participate in sports.
The survey of 27,867 girls by the children’s charity Youth Sport Trust found that the biggest barriers to girls’ exercise are:
- 33% say they lack confidence
- 33% don’t want others to see it
- 47% postponed due to their monthly periods
- 48% of girls say they feel embarrassed to exercise compared to 28% of boys.
Furthermore, many women say they worry about “personal safety and harassment if they exercise at night.”

Alarmingly, a new study found that the majority of teens don’t get enough physical exercise every day. Three out of four teenagers are not active enough.
In fact, as many as 75% of teens don’t get the recommended daily amount of movement.
It’s not easy being a teenager, especially nowadays. They have a lot of schoolwork to deal with, especially before exams, plus they also have a social life and some of them work part time.
This doesn’t always leave plenty of time in the day for them to move around, but it is important that they do. And if they can practice this healthy habit in their teens, they are more likely to maintain it into adulthood.
Maybe technology is to blame?
Experts at the University of Georgia have found that when it comes to lack of exercise, females do worse than males.
Researchers surveyed more than 360,000 high school students in Georgia. They asked each of them about their levels of physical activity and their school environment.
The results found that 35% of the female students were active while 57% of the male students were physically active.
Interestingly, the researchers found that females were more physically active if they were bullied, while the opposite was true for males.
Schools should do more to encourage exercise
It appears that schools can do more to help increase physical activity.
“Recess duration, physical facilities, and social environments in schools have been shown to influence physical activity among students,” said Thapa, co-author of the study.
We don’t know much about the role of school climate in physical activity. There must be barriers encountered by certain groups of students. Hence, we wanted to investigate the difference by gender.”
“For example, female students who are active in sports and physical activity may not fit the gender standard and therefore may face bullying.”
