For the marinated chicken breasts in this air fryer, I used some of the same techniques that help me keep the chicken fresh on the grill! And this skillet chicken was amazing for a low carb dinner!
Marinated chicken fingers in the air fryer to try later!
When I first started seeing recipes for Air Fryer chicken breasts, I admit I was skeptical about whether you could cook chicken breasts in an air fryer without drying out the chicken. But one day it amazed me that I can use the same methods that I do Make grilled chicken breasts To preserve the freshness of the chicken in the air fryer!
And when I tried Kara to test the differences in Air Fryer Marinated Chicken BreastWe loved the way the chicken came out of the air fryer and browned on the outside but still moist and juicy on the inside. And we didn’t even have to flip it, although you can flip the chicken if you prefer. Chicken Breasts Air Fryer to win!
What kept marinated chicken breasts moist in an air fryer?
There were a few things that helped the marinated chicken breast stay moist in the air fryer:
- Marinate the chicken throughout the day using the marinade with olive oil, lemon juice and dried herbs.
- I cut slits lengthwise down the bottom of the chicken breasts to help the chicken cook evenly and more quickly. (Some culinary experts call this “sliced chicken.”)
- Allow the marinated chicken breasts to reach room temperature before cooking them.
- I cooked chicken breasts relatively quickly over high heat, without flipping.
What ingredients do you need for this recipe?
What if you don’t have time to mix a special seasoning?
For the air fryer chicken breast recipe, I used a seasoning that was slightly adapted from my own Grilled chicken breasts with garlic, lemon and herbs. That was delicious and worked perfectly, but if you want something simpler you can use my popular Two-ingredient chicken marinade. Or marinate chicken breasts in about ½ cup Newman Classic Oil and Vinegar Dressing (Continued link) For an even easier version!
What air fryer did you use?
I became a huge fan of air fryer after I found out Air Fryer Roasting Oven, Cuisinart (Referral link) This is what I used for this recipe. This air fryer has a larger basket, which allows me to fit four (or more) fish, and I find this model handy. I also love having an air fryer that stays on the counter.

ingredients
-
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
-
1/3 cup olive oil
-
2 T fresh lemon juice
-
2 tsp. garlic powder
-
1 1/2 tsp. Spike seasoning (see notes)
-
1 1/2 tsp. dried basil
-
2/3 tsp. dried seasoning
-
2/3 tsp. onion powder
-
1/4 tsp. dried sage
-
1/4 tsp. black pepper
directions
- Trim any visible fat and unwanted parts of the chicken breast. If it’s not close to the same thickness, I’ll also cut some of the bottom pieces off so they’re just as thick. (You can freeze these scraps to make Homemade chicken broth if you like.)
- Cut short, shallow slits crosswise toward the bottom of each chicken breast. I separate the slits about 1/2 inch.
- Mix olive oil, lemon juice, garlic powder, spike seasoning, dried basil, dried oregano, onion powder, dried sage, and some freshly ground black pepper to make the seasoning.
- Place the prepared chicken breasts in a large ziplock bag or a plastic container with an airtight lid.
- Pour the dressing into the marinade, seal the bag or container, and turn several times until the chicken is completely covered with the marinade, and the chicken has marinate in the refrigerator all day. (If you can’t do all-day soaks, try to do it for at least 4-6 hours. Longer soaks of 10 or 12 hours won’t hurt a bit.)
- When you’re ready to cook, drain the chicken and discard the marinade.
- Put the marinated chicken breasts in the basket of the air fryer and let them come to room temperature.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F/204°C if the air fryer needs to be preheated. (You can use 390°F/198°C if this is the highest temperature on your Air Fryer model.)
- Place the basket in the air fryer and cook the chicken breasts for 12-14 minutes. You don’t have to turn the chicken but if you notice that some edges are browning more than others, you can rotate the chicken pieces or rotate the basket.
- After 12 minutes (or a little less if your air fryer is cooking hot) I’ll start checking the temperature with instant read meat thermometer (Referral link).
- Chicken should be cooked to 165 F/75 C to be safe to eat.
- Serve air-fryer marinated chicken breasts hot and enjoy!
Notes
If you don’t have spike seasoning, use any type of all-purpose spice mix.
This recipe was developed and tested by Kalyn and Kara. The marinade has been adapted to the chicken a little bit of Grilled chicken breasts with garlic, lemon and herbs.
