Every year, it’s fun to look at my fitness ball and see what I think are going to be the biggest trends in the industry. Now I’m a little wary about these types of posts, especially since I originally thought 2020 was going to be a little less reliant on gadgets and technology…and we all know how that turned out.
Over the past year, we’ve seen a shift to in-person lessons and coaching after being mostly or completely virtual for a few years. Classes are bigger than ever, people are working out in the gym, and that was a testament to the value of personal training and networking. Technology can be a convenience tool, but it cannot fully replace the value of personal training.
When I personally train clients, I can see the full picture of their moves. When I watch you squat, I don’t just count the reps. I’m looking at your shoulders, torso, core adduction, knees, ankle flexion, any foot rotation, and gluteal involvement. I can see some of these things on the screen, but not all of them. I absolutely believe that personal training and fitness will continue to see top year!
Here are more of my predictions for 2023:
Nutrition and training for health over aesthetics
It may also be due to the accounts I follow and the voices I surround myself with online, but I see a continued focus on training for career and health rather than just looking a certain way. Of course there are still trash reels and TikToks (do this video and you’ll be so sore you want to die! Or do this video if you want a nice ass in 10 minutes!), but for the most part, I see training in longevity and wellness in general. I think there will be a continued focus on mobility training, rest, recovery strategies, walking, progressive strength training, and strategic cardio.
Pilates and Megaformer are going to have a huge year
I know I’m not supposed to lump them in the same category, but in my opinion, they’re the same (even though I know they’re very different). I feel like yoga has gotten a lot of love over the past few years, and while Pilates will always be popular, it’s definitely having a moment right now.
The peloton will continue to level off and possibly ease as people return to more personal cycling lessons
This is no opposition to Peloton – I love the workouts and the rest – but I think they’re starting to realize they’ve lost energy and motivation from personal fitness. Personally, I always work out hard when I’m not working out at home.
Focus on recovery and less intense group fitness classes – movement, stretching and meditation
I think group cocktail dates with friends will be replaced by outdoor yoga and mocktails.
Biohacking trends will continue: functional medicine detoxes, cryotherapy, red light therapy, blue light blocking glasses at night, cold soaks, saunas, castor oil packs
It should be noted here that you should always check with your doctor before making any changes to your routine. Also, you don’t need to do something just because it’s trendy. Sometimes, these are also stressors that can be counterproductive if you are already experiencing a high level of stress.
The continued popularity of wellness tools, such as Oura Loop, Nutrisense, InsideTracker, etc.
Wellness Addict Friends turns to data to take personal vital signs and performance to the next level, and an app or tool can be used to make simple, customized adjustments in your routine.
So you have it! I would love to hear your fitness and wellness predictions for 2023!
